Generous Listening
September 6, 2006
Dina
Dear Friend,

"Sometimes it is a great joy just to listen to someone we love talking."

Vincent McNabb, God's Way of Mercy

Have you forgotten what a joy it is to listen to someone you love talking? Do you even know what it is to listen to someone with all your attention...to be fully present to another person? Listening to another with all of your being is a generous gift. Can you remember when you've been listened to that way? Can you remember when another person looked you in the eye and gave you his or her full attention, without interrupting, in such a way that you felt honored, valued and even loved? It is a wonderful feeling to be listened to that way and listening to others that way honors them and creates in us the opportunity to really hear what is being said, even between the words...beyond the words. Once you begin connecting with people in that way, you will be amazed by the gifts you receive.

This week, be a generous listener. Listen with your ears, your eyes, an open posture and an open heart. Give your full attention to those who are speaking to you and when you notice your mind wandering to what YOU are going to say next, gently remind yourself to listen. There will be plenty of time to come up with a response, if one is required, after you have listened.

The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well- intentioned words.

Some thoughts to ponder...

When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.

Ernest Hemingway

"If you want others to like you, if you want to develop real friendships, if you want to hep others at the same time as you help yourself, keep this principle in mind: Become genuinely interested in other people"

Dale Carnegie

My words are a whisper, your deafness a shout.

Jethro Tull

No man ever listened himself out of a job.

Calvin Coolidge

The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.

A New Experience of Your Life
True Freedom 8 week seminars kick-off

Anyone can live an average life, getting through each day and through each week. But to have an extraordinary life, most of us can use some help. The first 7 Steps to True Freedom 8 week program started last night but space is still available in the Thursday night series that starts September 28.

This program, presented in a group setting, is the same program offered to one-on-one life coaching clients . One client who completed the 7 Steps to True Freedom said "Words cannot describe the changes my life has experienced through the 'True Freedom' program with Coach Dan Wilson. It feels like every day serves to re-define 'how high is high in my life." Another said, "Dina opened my mind to a more positive way of thinking, a different way of speaking to myself and others and the unlimited ongoing possibilities of choices."

Take the first step toward living the life you really want by registering for the 7 Steps to True Freedom seminar program today!
